8.5: Create Hotspot And Labeling Questions
Hotspot and labeling questions assess whether learners can recognize locations or identify parts of a visual. Accurate image preparation and target placement matter because the visual itself becomes part of the answer key.
In this section, you will add an image, define hotspot regions or labels, and test the activity at the learner's screen size.
Before You Begin
Choose an image whose important regions remain distinguishable when scaled. Remove sensitive data and decorative details that compete with the task. Avoid an image crop that cuts through a target area.
1. Add The Source Image
- Select Questions, then choose Hotspot or Labeling.
- Select the image area in the question.
- Add an image from one of the available image sources.
- Set its fit and focal point so every assessed region remains visible.
- Preview the slide at its normal learner size before creating targets.
Create the final crop first. Target positions are stored relative to the image, so ordinary scaling keeps them aligned, but replacing or substantially recropping the image can make the original targets semantically wrong.
Important: Removing the source image from a Hotspot question also removes its hotspot regions. Removing it from a Labeling question also removes its labels and answer items.
2. Create A Hotspot Question
Use a Hotspot question when the learner should click one or more correct regions.
- Select the Hotspot question and write an instruction that says what to locate.
- Select Add Circle Hotspot for a round target or Add Rectangle Hotspot for a rectangular target.
- When the pointer changes to a crosshair, drag over the correct region in the image.
- Repeat the command for every additional correct region.
- Select a hotspot and use Hotspot Styles in Properties to set Color, Opacity, and Radius.
- Open Present and click once inside every required region.
The response is correct only when every authored hotspot has been found and every learner click falls inside a hotspot. A missing target or an extra click outside the correct regions makes the question incorrect. The question does not award partial points for finding only some regions.
Use Clear All Hotspots only when you intend to remove every authored region and rebuild the answer key.
After submission, feedback can mark the learner's click positions. The correct target areas are not automatically exposed as part of immediate feedback; use the Answer Key explanation in Section 8.7 when learners need a clear explanation of the intended regions.
3. Create A Labeling Question
Use Labeling when the learner should associate text labels with specific image targets.
- Add and finalize the source image.
- Select the Labeling question and write a clear instruction.
- Select Add correct label.
- When the crosshair appears, click the intended target position on the image.
- Edit the paired answer label so it names that target.
- Repeat Add correct label for every target.
- Add an incorrect label only when a plausible distractor improves the assessment.
- Open Present, place each correct label at its target, and submit the question.
The complete set of label-to-target pairs must match the answer key. One missing or incorrectly placed label makes the question incorrect; individual labels do not receive partial points.
Use Remove All Labels only when you want to delete the entire set. If one label is wrong, remove or revise that item instead of rebuilding unrelated labels.
4. Make The Visual Question Usable
- Make every target large enough to select without pixel-level precision.
- Keep neighboring targets separated so their clickable areas do not overlap accidentally.
- Use color for emphasis, not as the only way to identify a region.
- Write instructions that describe the object or relationship being assessed.
- Keep labels short and avoid placing targets under long answer text.
- Preview at a narrow width as well as the normal desktop size.
For dense diagrams, split the task into several slides or use a higher-resolution source image. A technically correct but tiny target produces a frustrating assessment rather than a useful one.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Add correct label is unavailable | Add and select the source image first. |
| Dragging does not create a hotspot | Choose Add Circle Hotspot or Add Rectangle Hotspot, then make a visible drag rather than a single click. |
| Correct-looking Hotspot clicks are rejected | Check for a required region that was not clicked or an extra click outside all regions. |
| Targets no longer identify the correct object | The source image may have been replaced or recropped. Rebuild the targets against the final image. |
| Labels overlap in the player | Shorten their text, spread the target positions, or divide the activity into smaller questions. |
Quick Check
You have completed this section when all targets remain aligned after resizing, every required region or pair must be completed for a correct result, and the activity remains readable in Present.
