8.4: Create Sequence And Matching Questions
Sequence and matching questions assess relationships rather than isolated facts. Their authored order or pairing becomes the answer key, so every item must have one clear position or partner.
In this section, you will create Sequence and Matching questions and test their drag interactions in the player.
Before You Begin
Use Sequence only when one defensible order exists. Use Matching when each item has one clearly intended partner. Keep the set short enough to understand without excessive scrolling or trial and error.
1. Create A Sequence Question
The order shown while authoring is the correct order. The player rearranges the items for the learner.
- Open the destination slide, select Questions, and choose Sequence.
- Replace the sample prompt with a clear ordering instruction, such as “Arrange the steps from first to last.”
- Edit the answer items so they appear in the correct order in the editor.
- Select Add Answer for each additional step, then replace its sample text.
- Remove unused items and review the complete authored order.
- In Properties, open Drag Indicator and choose whether the drag indicator should be shown.
- Open Present and confirm that the learner begins with a shuffled order.
- Move every item into the correct sequence and submit it.
The response is correct only when the entire submitted order matches the authored order. An item in one wrong position makes the question incorrect; the question does not award partial points for individual positions.
Avoid steps that can legitimately happen at the same time. If two items are interchangeable, add context to the prompt or use another question type.
2. Create A Matching Question
Each authored row defines one correct pair.
- Select Questions and choose Matching.
- Write a prompt that names the relationship, such as “Match each term to its definition.”
- Edit both sides of the first pair.
- Select Add Answer to add another pair, then replace the text on both sides.
- Continue until every source has one target.
- Remove incomplete or unused pairs, then check for duplicate wording.
- Open Present, place each source with its intended target, and submit the question.
The player rearranges flow-positioned source items while preserving the target set. Items that have been deliberately placed at fixed slide positions remain in those positions so the authored layout is not destroyed.
The complete set of submitted pairs must match the answer key. One missing or incorrect pair makes the question incorrect; individual pairs do not receive partial points.
3. Keep The Interaction Clear
- Use short labels that remain distinguishable after the player rearranges them.
- Do not create duplicate sources or targets unless the prompt explicitly explains why.
- Keep each source and target grammatically compatible.
- State the direction of the relationship instead of using only “Match the following.”
- Place nearby instructions on the slide so the learner does not need to infer how to interact.
For a long activity, consider splitting the content into two questions. Fewer visible items reduce scrolling and make accidental drops easier to correct.
4. Test Both Correct And Incorrect States
In Present:
- confirm that every item is visible and readable;
- move one item and verify that the layout remains stable;
- submit one incomplete or incorrect arrangement;
- retry if attempts remain; and
- submit the fully correct arrangement.
Also check the configured feedback, score, attempt limit, and post-answer navigation. Those shared settings are covered in Section 8.7.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Sequence is marked incorrect although the steps seem reasonable | Compare the learner order with the exact authored order. Rewrite interchangeable steps so only one order is defensible. |
| Matching accepts none of the intended pairs | Verify both sides of every authored row and remove duplicated or incomplete pairs. |
| A newly added pair disrupts the layout | Review the complete Matching block after Add Answer; new pairs are placed into the matching layout automatically. |
| A source item is not shuffled | Check whether it was manually placed at a fixed slide position. Fixed-position items are preserved. |
| Labels wrap or become hard to drag | Shorten the text or split the activity into smaller questions. |
Quick Check
You have completed this section when the authored Sequence order and Matching pairs are unambiguous, the player rearranges the intended items, and only a completely correct response earns the question score.
